The Best New Comics for Kids Come to Vancouver

Lucky’s Comics on Main Street is hosting a book signing this Friday, Feb. 25th from 8 to 10 for Raina Telgemeier, Aaron Renier, Jason Shiga, Matt Holm, Dave Roman, and Gene Yang. If you’re not familiar with their work, you should be! Raina’s graphic novel Smile began life as an auto-bio webcomic back in the early days of internet comickry and is now in half the grade four classrooms in the country. Dave Roman’s new book Astronaut Academy promises to make a similar impact. Jason Shiga’s latest book, Meanwhile, is a brilliantly conceived choose-your-own-adventure comic. And if you haven’t at least heard of Gene Yang’s American Born Chinese, I’m sorry, we can’t be friends anymore.

They’ll also be at an event at UBC on the following day. That one you have to buy tickets for though. http://vancouverchildrenslitroundtable.wordpress.com/events/serendipity-2/

THE FIRST EVER 8-BITS OF DESTINY ART SHOWCASE Vancouver’s first ever Video Game art show!

Burnaby, British Columbia, August 10, 2010 — AWS Creative, Metropolis Comics and Toys and Anime Evolution are proud to present the first annual 8-Bits of Destiny Art Showcase, All Your Art Are Belong To Us, taking place November 6th to November 18th at Metropolis Comics and Toys, 4735 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC Canada. 8-Bits of Destiny is an art showcase inspired by video games and video game culture. For our first showcase, All Your Art Are Belong To Us, the theme will be art inspired by video games from ’85-’95. The showcase will kick off with a “Mountain Dew and Cheetos” (the equivalent to wine and cheese for gamers.) social, where the artists will have a chance to mingle with the public and potentially sell the pieces they have submitted. Part of the proceeds will be donated to a charity to be announced in the near future.
We are currently accepting submissions. There will be approximately 20-25 artist slots, with space for up to 3 pieces of art, depending on size and media. Submissions are open to all ages, and all forms of media, pending exhibitor approval. All pieces must be clearly inspired by video games from published between the years 1985 and 1995. Some examples include, but are not limited to: Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, Tetris, Bonk’s Adventure. We encourage you to think outside the box and explore more unique inspirations, but all submissions are welcome. You may choose to sell your piece(s) at the show, provided that a portion will be donated to our partner charity. For more information, or to submit a piece, please email your contact information and queries to [email protected] bitsofdestiny.com.
