The Best New Comics for Kids Come to Vancouver

Lucky’s Comics on Main Street is hosting a book signing this Friday, Feb. 25th from 8 to 10 for Raina Telgemeier, Aaron Renier, Jason Shiga, Matt Holm, Dave Roman, and Gene Yang. If you’re not familiar with their work, you should be! Raina’s graphic novel Smile began life as an auto-bio webcomic back in the early days of internet comickry and is now in half the grade four classrooms in the country. Dave Roman’s new book Astronaut Academy promises to make a similar impact. Jason Shiga’s latest book, Meanwhile, is a brilliantly conceived choose-your-own-adventure comic. And if you haven’t at least heard of Gene Yang’s American Born Chinese, I’m sorry, we can’t be friends anymore.

Futures of the Past Video

So me, Michael Park, and Ray Hsu walked into a bar… and we decided to make a graphic novel motion video collaboration!

This comic is also available in the next 21 Journeys book, a experiment in storytelling and exploration in visual language, tone, mood, and the idea of a journey.

Parka Blogs Artbook Reviews

I’m not sure if everyone’s already aware or not, but Parka Blogs is a fantastic resource for those of you who like to collect artbooks. If you’ve wondered if you should buy an artbook, but have been deceived by nice covers in the past, see if it’s been reviewed on Parka. He does a great review, shows photos of the interior, as well as a flip through so you can get an idea of what it looks like.

As you may or may not know, our official mascot is Umbrella Girl who graced the cover of our very first publication, Robots, Pine Trees & Broken Hearts, and she has made an appearance in every Cloudscape book since. So for a bit of fun, we’ve put the challenge out for artists to show us their take on Umbrella Girl. Here is our very first submission by volume 1 contributor Philip Stephen. Open Call for Artists!

Our next book will be a science fiction book with a theme of “machines”! We’re looking for more serious stories, commentaries on society, morals, and dark agendas. Pages will be black and white or grayscale, sized at 4.5 x 7.4375 bit you get full bleed!

Artists need to be residents or former residents of beautiful British Columbia! So if you got some comicking skills, show us some stuff and make us a short pitch for a 2 -15 page story! We need to see some sequential comics pages, even if they aren’t related to your Sci-Fi pitch, we need to see that you can tell a story with pictures.

So either reply in the forum, email info AT cloudscapecomics DOT com or show up in person and meet us at The Grind Cafe. We meet there every Wednesday at 7:30pm.

Introduce yourself, attach some sequentials or otherwise provide copies of your work that we can review, and tell us what kind of story you want to do.

All pitches and submissions must be in by Sept 30th if you want to be in this book!

A short word on pitches: a pitch is basically just a couple of paragraphs describing the story you intend to draw. There will be subsequent deadlines for pencils and final pages (with an expected printing date early in 2010), but you’ve got to make the Sept. 30th pitch deadline first.

Cloudscape was very pleased to have joined New Reliable Press last Saturday to launch our new comic book anthology, Funday Sunnies, alongside New Reliables’ two new books.

The event was well attended and many of Vancouver’s local greats were on hand.

Thanks to those who came! And thanks to Gabe at Lucky’s comics for letting us use the space, and Ed Brisson at New Reliable for all his help.
